Atty. Leonito Bacalando Jr., a native of Naval, Biliran, has made history as the first Filipino to be appointed as the Secretary of the Department of Justice in the Federated States of Micronesia. Bacalando’s appointment was confirmed by the Micronesian Congress, marking a significant milestone for Filipinos abroad.
His nomination was first submitted by Micronesian President Wesley Simina last year, and Bacalando’s appointment has since been approved. Bacalando expressed deep gratitude, calling the appointment a great honor for himself, his family, and the Filipino community. He pledged to uphold fairness and respect for the people in his administration of the Justice Department.
Bacalando moved to Micronesia and joined the Attorney General’s Office in 2002. Due to his excellent service, he was promoted to Chief of Law and Assistant Attorney General, solidifying his reputation in the legal community of Micronesia.
A proud Biliranon, Bacalando is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Leonito Bacalando Sr. He completed his secondary education at Naval Institute of Technology and earned his AB Political Science degree and law degree from the University of San Carlos in Cebu City. Before his move to Micronesia, he worked with prominent law firms in Cebu and Manila.
Micronesia, an island nation located in the western Pacific Ocean, is known for its beautiful beaches and is a popular tourist destination.
Bacalando’s achievement is a source of pride for both Biliran and the broader Filipino community, as he takes on a vital role in the governance of Micronesia.
