The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Almeria showcased its innovative approach to sustainable education governance during the PAGSANYOG kick-off event on October 1, 2024. As a 2023 Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) awardee, Almeria’s presentation highlighted its commitment to inclusive education and youth development.

Prioritizing Special Education

Almeria’s dedication to providing quality education for all is evident in its efforts to address the lack of special education teachers in the area. In 2023, the LGU hired Ms. Rose Ann B. Sumaya, utilizing the Special Education Fund to cover her salary and resources. Ms. Sumaya now teaches 28 differently-abled students at Almeria Central School and provides homebound education to those with physical impairments.

Nurturing Youth Leaders

Beyond special education, Almeria has invested in the development of its youth leaders. Through comprehensive capacity-building programs, the LGU aims to equip young people with essential skills such as leadership, technical writing, and resolution drafting. These programs also cover gender sensitivity, anti-drug campaigns, and social media literacy.

Promoting Peace and Safety

To ensure a secure environment for students, Almeria launched the National Crime Prevention Week: School-Based Peace and Order Public Safety Information Drive 2024. This initiative aims to raise awareness about crime prevention, peace, and public safety among students.

A Model for Sustainable Education

Almeria’s presentation at the PAGSANYOG event demonstrated its commitment to inclusive education and youth development, making it a model for other LGUs striving to meet SGLG standards. The LGU’s innovative approach to sustainable education governance highlights the importance of investing in education for all, regardless of background or ability.
